In this week’s post, we are going to address the two mindsets: living trapped in comparison vs. finding freedom and confidence in your God-given calling!

I’ve struggled with this exact same thing myself until I figured out what God continues to show me to shift this destructive mindset of comparison—and that’s what I’m going to share.

The Comparison Mindset

We live in a day and age where comparing ourselves to others is incredibly common, and it’s often fueled by social media and constant connectivity. This mindset can lead to feelings of inadequacy and dissatisfaction, as we measure our worth against over-photo-shopped images and other peoples acclaimed achievements. Recognizing this tendency is the first step.

Where do you compare yourself to others? For me personally I have many areas! I always want to be open with you, the reason I am able to talk about these topics like a comparison mindset is because I struggle with the same thing. You probably know I play competitive USTA tennis and the comparison game can be a destructive trap that a person can easily get pulled into. It’s the worst thing for your tennis game. It takes the fun out of the sport and it causes you to play tight which results in playing terribly! Another area in which this comes up for me is my podcast. I am always trying to improve my podcasting abilities and I’m on all kinds of podcasting sights on social media. If I’m not careful, seeing someone’s stats and comparing my stats to their stats is so unproductive. How about for you? Do you do this in your job with co-workers, compare? Are you not married yet and you compare yourself to your newly married friends, or maybe you are you a mom and you compare your mom skills to someone else’s results. I want you to really think about this: are you struggling with comparison, doubting your purpose.

Here are a couple of scriptures that give us biblical warnings of the comparison trap.

“Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.”

Galatians 5:26 (NIV)

This verse gently warns against comparing ourselves with others, which can lead to pride, rivalry, and jealousy. Instead, we are encouraged to live humbly and peacefully with one another, avoiding the trap of measuring our worth against others.

“For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.”

James 3:16 (NIV)

James cautions that when we let envy and selfish ambition—often born from comparing ourselves to others—take root, it leads to chaos and harmful behaviors. The gentle lesson is to guard our hearts against comparison-driven envy, choosing peace and contentment instead.

So, comparison basically steals our joy and undermines our God-given purpose. As Christians we want to break-free from comparing ourselves to others.

Success and Your Unique Calling

Now, let’s talk about God’s View of Success and Your Unique Calling. When we get into God’s word, he tells us as Christians we are made in God’s image. He has given each of us unique gifts and talent. He has called us for different purposes, and he has different timelines for each of us. We must be careful not to get caught up in worldly views of success. That the person with the most money, the best looks, the right house, the right car, the right friends is what makes a person successful. These things are all temporal and fleeting. Dwelling on these things will pull you into the comparison trap. God tells us in scripture, Romans 12:2 (NIV): “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” I encourage you to embrace your God-given purpose, finding confidence in your unique calling!

Practical Mindset Shifts: From Comparison to Confidence

Here are some strategies: Use faith-based affirmations, renewing your mind with Scripture, gratitude practices, focus on daily habits for working on the specific areas where you want to experience growth on your unique calling.

I want to encourage you to celebrate your own wins and trust God’s timing! I want you to find your contentment in Christ.

When you shift from the exhausting comparison trap to the freedom found in Christ, everything changes for you as a Christian woman. The comparison trap steals your joy and confidence, leaving you feeling less-than and doubting your unique calling—but God has a purpose and a path just for you, one that no one else can fulfill. By focusing on your own journey, celebrating your progress, and rooting your identity in Christ, you break free from envy and self-doubt, stepping boldly into your God-given purpose. Remember, you are fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14), equipped with unique gifts, and called to serve with confidence. Trust God’s timing, practice gratitude, and surround yourself with a supportive community—because your story matters, your business matters, and with Christ, you can walk in true freedom and abundance.

Monette Sedberry

Monette hosts a weekly podcast: Mornings with Monette.
