Lately, I’ve been wondering: is there a root cause or causes that answer why some people continue with something and why some people quit? Why some marriages work out and some don’t. Why some people continue to thrive in their life, even when circumstances change, they pivot and figure out what’s next and they rebound and start again. While the opposite is also, sadly, true. Some people give up on life when they feel they have lost their purpose or usefulness and die shortly after that. I’ve watched young people come from meager beginnings and go on to create a successful life and I’ve also witnessed the person born with tons of opportunity and advantage that squander away their opportunities.
Here are some of my conclusions.
I may say some things that will be upsetting to some. We live in a time where people are easily offended or triggered, and we should be sensitive. But I’m going to be bold and say what I believe to be true. I am going to address this in general, and I know there are always exceptions. But overall, I believe what I am going to share with you to be true!
I think when we come of age, when we are called to be a responsible adult, we had a decision to make. What do we envision for our life?
Some people get more time to figure this out but somewhere between the ages of 18-25, each person starts figuring out what they are going to do with their life. We are all individuals with very diverse backgrounds, upbringings, and personalities. I believe this young person can change their desires, but by a certain age, they are expected to grow up and take care of themselves. Each of us made this fundamental decision. Answering the basic question: “what are you going to be when you grow up?” probably played an important role in our plans.
The vision each person comes up with is unique to that person. But they form some vision, some future idea of how they see themselves living life. Again, this can change, but each person decides. From this vision, many future decisions are made.
This God-given ability of decision making is the one thing that sets us as humans apart from the animal kingdom. Our thinking brain is our greatest gift. God gave each one of us free will. We get to decide! As elementary as this is, our entire life is decision making!
I’m going to do a sidebar here on decision making. If you have followed my podcast or read my posts, you know I am a Bible believing Christian. The Bible is very clear about the most important decision we will ever be called to make, and that is accepting Jesus Christ as our Personal Lord and Savior. Believing that he died for me and for you and he forgives our sins. Romans 3:23 says we have all sinned and fall short of the glory of God . That if we confess our sins he is faithful and just to forgive our sins and offers us eternal live! That he rose from the grave and conquered death for me personally, and that by accepting this truth and trusting my life to him, I am a new creation and I will spend eternity with him in heaven. And with this decision (there it is a decision) he also gives us the indwelling Holy Spirit that gives us the ability to understand the Bible!
With that being said, I feel this is a non-negotiable. You coming to faith in Jesus Christ is the most important decision you will make in your life! With that decision as your foundation, I believe God has a plan for each of our lives. He gives us desires. He calls us to live out his purpose. And I also believe he a calls us to live out different purposes for different seasons of our life.
Again, our life is made of decisions! Ok, so back to the original questions we started out with at the beginning. I think the biggest thing that determines why people make certain decisions is how they see their future. It’s the vision they hold about their life.
It comes down to what they choose to believe. I can hear all the nay sayers. That’s not true, it’s the environment, a person’s upbringing, opportunities. I don’t disagree that outside forces can influence a person’s beliefs, but the individual still gets to decide what they want to believe. God designed us this way. Again, he has given us free will, a thinking brain. The ability to make decisions.
Create a New and Better Vision
I believe we can all agree on that. However, here is the piece that people don’t want to accept. Each individual adult is 100 percent responsible for his or her life. A lot of people don’t like to accept this fact. It’s as old as when Adam and Eve first sinned in the garden and made the decision to eat of the one tree God told them was the forbidden tree. And when they got called out by God what did Adam do? He blamed Eve, Eve blamed the serpent. And, what is our default when decisions we have made don’t turn out? We blame someone else. Taking responsibility is a hard truth. The good news is, once we grasp this truth, and stop giving our decision-making ability to other people, whether it’s people pleasing, staying in the place of being a victim to circumstances, or our blaming our life situation on our past, and we accept responsibility for our lives, our life will change. I don’t want you to miss this! This is very important! Once we truly accept this truth, this gives us the freedom to create a new and better vision; to take action, to believe in our abilities and that we have the ability to learn new capabilities! We can change the trajectory of our lives! I don’t care what life-stage we are in. But we must first take 100 percent responsibility for our life. This is a truth that I believe most people don’t get! Thinking that someone else is responsible is a lie! If you are an adult, you are responsible. You’re responsible to make a decision about your personal faith. You’re responsible for where you are right now in your life! This is the piece that if you grasp this idea, the way you look at life will change!
Now, I want you to take your decision-making ability and pray. God wants to give you hope. He will give you a vision for a better future. How will you know it is coming from him? Because it will align with his truths. Satan wants you to stay in a place of fear and complacency. Satan wants you to stay in a place of blame. God wants you to forgive. God wants to give you freedom! God wants a bigger and brighter future for you! God put’s desires in our hearts. He wants the best for his children! How do I know these things? Because he tells us in his word!
I want you to get out that journal. Where you have given your God-given decision making ability away? Next, step up and own exactly where you are in your life right now. I want you to take 100 percent responsibility and stop the blame game—even if you are doing it passively.
If you want to fall back in love with your life, you need to own your life. You need to make the decisions that will change your life. You need to ask God for a new vision for this stage of your life and when he answers that prayer you are going to need to trust and believe it is possible. You are going to need to sketch out a plan. This plan is a rough draft. It is not set in stone. If you try something and it doesn’t work, you try something else. You are in the decision-making business. Don’t be passive and feeling sorry for yourself. Just like when you were 18 and you had the information you had then, now you have a lot more information. You can become resourceful and gather more information. But it is up to you. God created you for great things, that will use the unique gifts and talents he gave you. He is not done with you yet. It is going to take a powerful vision and belief.
I am very passionate about this. The Lord has brought me through so many seasons. And I can tell you, when I’ve been the most miserable in my life is when I have lost the vision or when I have lost the belief. I believe this is a spiritual problem. Like you, I have had times when I have allowed Satan’s lies to creep in. The answer is prayer and going to God. Asking him to show me where I have unbelief. Where I am in the blame game. To show me where I have unforgiveness. Where I have lost the vision that he has given me. And God has been faithful. He has given me decision-making power and the gift of discernment. The power to make new decisions even when they are scary and hard. He has given this to you that too! We all have to use it!
If you want to fall in love with your life again, please go back and reread this post. It’s because you have a broken compass. You have lost the vision and the belief. God answers prayers! He is the ultimate true and reliable compass!
