As you may remember, I’ve been enjoying a delightful “second act” as a budding artist. I’ve been painting, drawing, and taking *lots* of classes. I can honestly say, it’s been such a gift.
There’s something deeply satisfying about finding a new way to express yourself… especially at this stage of life.
One of the artists I follow on Instagram and Substack, Helen C. Stark, inspires me not just with her colorful sketchbooks, but with the way she *sees* the world. She looks at everyday life with young, fresh, curious eyes—and recently, she shared a phrase that stopped me in my tracks:
“Mundane miracles.”
I loved that.
Now, the idea that “everywhere I look I see miracles” isn’t new. My coach, Dr. Edie Wadsworth, has encouraged that very thought for years. But calling them “mundane miracles?” That brings it right into everyday life in a way that feels tangible…and doable.
Because when we think of miracles, we tend to think big:
—A surprise check in the mail (still waiting for that one!)
—A dramatic recovery
—A near miss on the freeway
Those moments are powerful…and rare.
The real magic?
It’s in the ordinary.
—A parking spot right when you need it
—Flowers blooming where you didn’t expect them
—A baby across the room who locks eyes with you—and beams
Or even:
—Warm, clean clothes fresh out of the dryer
—A dishwasher that quietly did its job overnight
—Windshield wipers that glide perfectly across the glass (no squeak… just me?)
These small moments are easy to overlook—but what if we didn’t?
What if we actually *noticed* them?
Science now confirms what Scripture has said all along: “A cheerful heart is good medicine”(Proverbs 17:22). And what creates a more cheerful heart than noticing the goodness already surrounding us?
Noticing shifts everything.
It lifts your mood.
It softens your perspective.
It reminds you that your life—right now, as it is—is already full of quiet, beautiful gifts.
So, this week, try it.
Look for the mundane miracles.
They’re everywhere.
And once you start seeing them… you may find they were never mundane at all.
