What If You Don’t Need Your Old Marriage Back?

Have you ever looked at your husband and thought, I love you, but I don’t know how to get us back?

There’s no major problem. You care about each other. You’ve built a life together. But somehow the connection that once seemed to happen naturally takes more effort now.

One of the most common things I hear from women in midlife is, “I don’t know how to get it back.”

But what if getting it back isn’t really the goal?

Sometimes our marriage isn’t broken. Our patterns simply haven’t changed with our season.

For years, life was organized around responsibilities—raising children, work, school schedules, activities, meals, appointments and everything else that needed to get done. Our marriages existed inside that structure.

Then the children grow up. Life changes. We have more time and freedom, but many of our old routines remain. And suddenly we find ourselves wondering, We’re here. We love each other. So how do we reconnect?

When I Realized I Was Filling the Space

I began to recognize this in my own life after becoming an empty nester. My husband and I had our routines, our schedules and our individual rhythms. I would come downstairs in the morning, go outside, sit by the fire pit and have my quiet time. There wasn’t anything wrong with any of it.

But I also found myself doing something else with all this new time on my hands. I started going to TJ Maxx and Marshalls. Not because I needed anything. I would walk around, find a deal, buy something I didn’t need and, half the time, take it back later. Eventually I realized I wasn’t really shopping. I was trying to fill something. I was looking for somewhere to go and something to do because I didn’t quite know what to do with this new space in my life.

That realization made me look at some of the other patterns in my life and marriage. Nothing was going to change if I kept doing everything exactly as I had always done it. So I made one very practical change. I turned my son’s old bedroom into an office where I could work on my podcast and spend more time at home.

Something unexpected happened. My husband and I began naturally connecting throughout the day.

“Hey, what are you working on?”

“Come look at this.”

“Let me tell you what I’m thinking.”

Nothing forced. Nothing complicated. We simply had more little moments together. We shared more. We laughed more. We started looking for things to do together. We still have independent lives. I go to Bible Study Fellowship. I play tennis. I have my podcast and coaching business. He works on properties and works out. But now there is connection inside our independence.

And I can honestly say we’ve become best friends again.

Maybe the Old Way Doesn’t Fit Anymore

That experience taught me something about marriage in this season of life.

It’s not necessarily that you can’t get the connection back. The old way simply may not get you where you want to go now.

We can keep the same routines and rhythms even though we’re living in a completely different season. We may also wait until we feel connected before we do anything differently.

But sometimes we have to create the small moments first and allow the feelings to follow.

And perhaps we’re asking the wrong question altogether.

Instead of, “How do I get my old marriage back?” what if we asked, “What could our marriage become now?”

You don’t necessarily need the old version of your marriage. There may be levels of friendship, emotional connection, affection, romance and physical intimacy that the two of you haven’t even experienced yet.

Five Small Shifts Toward Connection

You don’t need to overhaul your marriage. Start small.

1. Change One Pattern

Look at your normal day and ask, Where could we create a little more overlap in our lives? One small change can create opportunities for connection that weren’t there before. For me, moving my work home helped create those opportunities naturally.

2. Stop Filling Every Empty Space

Shopping. Scrolling. Projects. Activities. Staying busy. Sometimes we fill every opening in our lives without asking ourselves what we’re actually looking for. Ask yourself, What am I really needing right now? Maybe what you’re craving isn’t another activity. Maybe you miss feeling close to your husband.

3. Create Natural Connection Points

Reconnecting doesn’t have to begin with a serious conversation about your marriage. One small change that became meaningful for me involved something as ordinary as coffee. When I came downstairs to make mine, I started making a cup for my husband, too. I’d bring it to him and sometimes return later with a fresh cup. Those became our little moments. We’d talk about what we had going on that day or simply spend a few minutes together.

Connection usually isn’t built through one grand effort. It grows through small, consistent moments.

4. Let It Be Simple

We can make rebuilding intimacy much harder than it needs to be. It doesn’t always require a big date night, a romantic vacation or a deep conversation. It can be sitting beside him instead of across the room. Laughing together. A longer kiss. Putting down your phone when he starts talking. Letting yourself enjoy him again.

Those moments matter because emotional connection and physical intimacy are often being built long before you ever reach the bedroom.

5. Be Willing to Do Marriage Differently Now

Your children are older. You have more freedom. You know yourself differently, and you know your husband differently. This is a new season. Give yourself permission to build a marriage that fits it.

What Could Your Marriage Become?

I don’t believe God is asking us to recreate an earlier version of our marriages. Perhaps He’s inviting us to build something deeper—more intentional, more connected, rooted in friendship and filled with affection.

Picture your marriage a year from now. You enjoy spending time together. There’s more laughter and affection. Conversations come more easily. You feel emotionally close. You feel desired. Romance comes more naturally, and you enjoy physical intimacy again. Your husband feels not only like your partner, but also your best friend and your lover.

What would that look like for you? And what is one small change that might begin moving you toward it?

Take that vision to God. Ask Him to show you what needs to change in you and where you might create room for something new. Sometimes rebuilding connection doesn’t begin with a dramatic conversation or an elaborate plan. Sometimes it begins with changing one routine, making a cup of coffee or simply choosing to sit a little closer.

If intimacy still feels like a challenge, that doesn’t mean it’s gone. Maybe it simply needs to be rebuilt differently in this season.

Your best years of connection don’t have to be behind you. You may simply be ready to build what comes next.
